International Online Discussion: Gender-Based Violence, Gender Justice and Sustainability
The Sustainable Development Goal SDG 5 aims to achieve gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls. A look into reality reveals an issue worldwide in this field. Action is needed to address and improve the situation. Gender justice includes for example equal payment of employees doing the same work, participation in decision-making, the right of inheritance, etc. According to UN-statistics 1 in 3 women have been subjected to physical and/or sexual violence at least once in their lifetime since the age of 15, this is intensified by the pandemic. All over the world, concerned people are aware of this issue, victims are calling for help and safe spaces. However, the means of formal and non-formal institutions are different.
In this discussion, the main questions are: In which way interrelate Gender Justice, Democracy and Sustainability? Which role can education play to achieve the goal and to overcome gender-based violence? We`ll give space to victims to express themselves plus representatives from partner organisations of the Learn2Change network in Ghana and Uganda to frame the situation in those countries as examples. A German perspective will complement the reports, as well as examples of good practice for overcoming gender-based violence and achieving gender justice in the context of the SDGs from all countries.
After the impulses from the different experts, the discussion will be opened to all participants to share experiences and possible strategies of solutions. As a backgrounder, we would like to recommend the „Istanbul Convention“: The structure of this international agreement is based on the "four Ps": Prevention, Protection and support of victims, Prosecution of offenders and Integrated Policies.
